How To Deduplicate Hyper-V VMs with Windows Server 2012 R2

I worked hard on Hyper-V recently, and I was happy to find that there are plenty of good resources of the community in Hyper-V that can help people get started with it.

One feature that I spent a lot of time working deduplication is Windows Server 2012. This feature was introduced with the basic version of Windows Server 2012 and intended to present actions and data profiles "unstructured". This means, not Exchange or SQL Server running on it!

Windows Server 2012 R2 introduces an additional flavor deduplication designed to Hyper-V VM. The new iteration addresses VDI virtual machines, but that does not necessarily preclude a regular VM. In addition, Cluster Shared Volumes are supported (but not required) to run deduplication on Hyper-V VM. Figure 1 shows a volume that is enabled for deduplication.

Virtual machines , well done , are good candidates for deduplication. Enabling this feature allows you to save some space (in many cases , a lot of disk space) allocated to virtual machines. This is particularly applicable to C: \ and VHDXs VHD virtual machines that come from the same libraries .

Here are some tips on using Windows Server 2012 R2 deduplication. First, do not put the Hyper-V VM and VHD VHDXs 's C: Hyper - V \ , masters Deduplication is not supported there. Make a designated drive letter and run deduplication there.

The next tip is to set the scheduler to run at the appropriate time . There can be up to 25-50 per cent of the allocated CPU in Windows Server 2012 through deduplication for terabytes of data. Make sure you have at a time that the hosts can receive the blow of the CPU. He has also successfully multipath too . Configure deduplication schedule file and storage services section in Server Manager and Scheduler (see Fig. 2)
